According to the deliberations of the FCUP Scientific Council on April 9, 2025, the 90 days extension has some specific details compared to previous academic years.
90 days extension Request
A 90 days extension of registration can only be requested once (during your 4th or 5th registration). Note that the maximum duration of a PhD registration is now 6 consecutive years.
The 2025/2026 academic year is considered a transition year. Exceptionally, the following students may request a 90 days extension, even if they have done so previously:
Students who have already requested the 90 days extension in prior academic years.
Students who have more than 6 registrations.

Procedure
To request a 90 days extension, your request must be well-justified to ensure you will be able to apply for your thesis defense by the end of the requested extension period. The renewal process is completed in two phases.
Phase 1: Obtaining the Course Director's Statement
The request for the course director's statement is made via an online form [HERE], where you must submit:
1. Student's Request (using the form provided by FCUP): Note that the request must include a brief description of the current status of your thesis writing, including the progress of the different chapters and published/submitted or in-preparation articles. This description should demonstrate the feasibility of completing the thesis within the 90 days period.
2. Supervisor Team's Statement: This statement validates the student's request. It is recommended that the statement acknowledge the student's request and be a single document signed by all members of the supervisory team, including their names (ideally with digital signatures via ID documents).
Phase 2: Submitting the Request via Infociências (FCUP)
After obtaining the Course Director's positive statement, the student must submit the renewal request through the dedicated module in Infociências, attaching all required documents.
The necessary forms for this process are available for consultation and download at INFOCIENCIA.
